Some books make you want to pack a bag, get on a boat, or look at the natural world a little differently. From freediving and legendary ocean crossings to survival, conservation, and lives shaped by the sea, these ten books are made for curious travelers and anyone who feels pulled toward the wild. The list includes true stories, science, memoirs, and novels, but each one has something in common: it reminds us how much there is still to learn from the ocean, the people who mo

Every year, one of the world's most remarkable wildlife migrations takes place across the Pacific Ocean. Between June and November, southern humpback whales arrive in the warm, protected waters of French Polynesia after traveling thousands of kilometers from Antarctica. It's a season filled with mothers and calves, remarkable behaviors, melodies, and unforgettable encounters. If you're planning to experience humpback whales in Moorea or simply want to learn more about these i

Some moments stay with you long after an expedition ends. The wildlife encounters, the places that feel almost impossible to describe and the people who experience them alongside you can change the way you see the natural world. After traveling with Wander Out in French Polynesia, Norway, Raja Ampat and Baja, one guest shared the moments that left the biggest impression and what continues to bring them back. What moment from the expedition do you still think about the most? F

See what makes our South Africa expedition so meaningful, from wildlife encounters in Kruger to volunteering with the team at Care for Wild.

One of the best parts of spending time around wildlife is realizing how much is happening beneath the surface. A mobula ray launching itself into the air might look playful. A pile of rhino dung might look unimportant. But these behaviors can play a role in how animals hunt, communicate, protect themselves, and raise their young. Across our ocean and safari expeditions, we have the chance to observe animals in their natural environments. Sightings are never guaranteed, but th

Choosing the right sunscreen is about more than sun protection. Learn how to identify reef-safe options and avoid ingredients linked to marine impacts.

If you've ever seen a video of hundreds, or even thousands, of rays swimming just beneath the surface, with many from the same fever (a group of rays) launching themselves out of the ocean at once, there's a good chance you were watching mobula munkiana rays. Every summer, the waters off Baja California Sur become home to one of the ocean's most incredible wildlife events. Thousands of mobula munkiana rays gather in massive schools, creating unforgettable encounters both abov

There are few travel experiences that compare to seeing wildlife in its natural environment. Whether it's a humpback whale surfacing beside the boat, a sea turtle gliding over a reef, or an elephant walking quietly across the savanna, those moments stick with you long after the trip is over. They're also a privilege. As more people travel to experience wildlife, it's becoming more important than ever to think about the impact we have while we're there. The good news is that t

Whether you're swimming with whales in French Polynesia, searching for mobulas in Baja, or exploring the remote waters of Indonesia, packing for an ocean expedition is a little different than packing for a typical vacation. Most of your days will be spent on the water. You'll be moving between boats, ocean swims, wildlife encounters, and long hours under the sun. We always recommend packing light and being smart with the items you choose to bring. After years of running exped

Introducing you to our captain of the Mo’orea expeditions, Patea Alexandre. He’s been working with whales for over 25 years and his expertise shows when we’re on the water. One thing different about Wander Out Expeditions is we only hire local guides and captains that know the land, water and share our values. Patea is one of those people. What first pulled you to the ocean? I grew up with my grandfather who was a fisherman. I liked being with him to learn about the water. He

Most people think they understand orcas… until they’re actually in the water with them. Then everything you thought you knew starts to shift.

Go behind the scenes of Wander Out Expeditions in this interview with founder and expedition leader Kelsey. Learn how intentional travel, small groups, and respect for wildlife shape every experience.

Our ocean safari is an experience that stays with you long after you leave and these are just a few small moments of life below the surface.

If you’re joining an ocean safari, chances are you’ll be spending long days in and out of the water. Wildlife encounters don’t happen on a schedule. Sometimes the best moment of the day happens on the fourth or fifth entry. That means you might be jumping back into the ocean again and again throughout the day. A good wetsuit keeps you warm, comfortable, and ready for those moments instead of cutting your time in the water short. Here’s what to know when choosing the right wet

There's a big difference between snorkeling on vacation and going on an ocean safari. On a beach trip, you might float around for 20 minutes in calm shallow water. On an ocean safari, you’re jumping in the open ocean from a boat. The water may be moving and choppy and you may be going in and out all day. Your mask and snorkel are small pieces of gear but they can completely change your experience, especially on an ocean expedition. If they work, you’ll forget they’re on your

Some places stay with you long after you’ve left. French Polynesia is one of those places. Not because it’s ‘picture perfect’ (although we all know it is) but because of how it feels to be there. The way the light beams through the waves, the many hues of blue and green. These are just small glimpses into a place where there’s quiet, fresh air, and life moving beneath the surface. If the idea of joining an ocean expedition sounds incredible but also scares you and you don't know where to start then, welcome. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. Ocean expeditions aren’t about being the strongest swimmer, the best diver, or the most experienced traveler in the room. It's about curiosity. Respect. And saying yes to experiences with no expectations especially ocean safaris and just enjoying being out on the ocean regardless of what you see or not.

It was our last day on our last Mobula Ray & Megafauna trip in Baja, California. The kind of day where you think the ocean has already shown you everything she’s got and then she proves you wrong. We started the morning heading toward the sea lion colony at La Reina, playing in the blue with the sea lions before setting out to find mobula rays for a final goodbye. That was the plan. We found only three rays, but a few of our guests asked if they could jump in one more time. “

Holiday season always arrives so fast but it doesn’t have to be spent shopping last minute or mindlessly buying. It’s a perfect time to slow down, shop intentionally and choose gifts that actually enrich someone’s life and not just add to stuff in your house. As a traveler, free diver and nomad, I’m always testing gear in saltwater, sand, humidity, long haul flights, boats, islands, the arctic, you name it. But I also try to be mindful of what I purchase and take in my lugga
