Reef-Safe Sunscreen: What It Really Means (And How to Choose the Right One)

If you're planning a snorkeling trip, beach vacation, or ocean expedition, sunscreen is probably already on your packing list. But have you ever stopped to wonder whether it's also safe for the places you're exploring?
You've probably seen bottles labeled "reef safe" or "reef friendly." The problem is, those terms don't always mean what you think they do.
Here's what every ocean traveler should know before heading into the water.

Is "reef-safe" sunscreen actually regulated?
The short answer, no.
Terms like "reef safe"Â and "reef friendly"Â are not regulated, which means companies can use them without meeting a universal standard. A sunscreen may advertise itself as reef friendly while still containing ingredients that scientists and conservation organizations recommend avoiding.
That's why it's important to look beyond the front label and check the ingredient list.
Why does sunscreen matter?
Coral reefs are already under pressure from warming oceans, pollution, disease, and overfishing. While sunscreen isn't considered the primary threat to reefs, research has shown that some UV-filtering chemicals can negatively affect corals and other marine organisms under certain conditions. Because of this, many marine parks, conservation groups, and destinations encourage visitors to choose products that are less likely to impact marine ecosystems.
It's one small decision that can help reduce your impact while enjoying the ocean.
Ingredients to avoid
Many conservation organizations recommend avoiding sunscreens containing the following ingredients:
Oxybenzone
Octinoxate
Octocrylene
Homosalate
PABA
Triclosan
Parabens
4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor (4-MBC)
Some organizations also recommend avoiding microplastics in personal care products whenever possible.
What should you look for instead?
Many national parks and reef conservation organizations recommend choosing mineral-based sunscreens that use:
Non-nano zinc oxide
Non-nano titanium dioxide
These ingredients create a physical barrier that reflects UV rays instead of absorbing them like many chemical filters.
If possible, look for products that clearly state "non-nano."Â While research on nanoparticles continues, many conservation organizations recommend choosing non-nano mineral formulas as a precaution.
Lotion or spray?
Lotions are generally the better choice.
Spray sunscreens can drift into the air, onto the sand, and into surrounding environments before they even reach your skin. They can also be inhaled during application, especially if they contain mineral particles.
A lotion gives better coverage, reduces waste, and is generally recommended over aerosol sprays when spending time around coral reefs.

The most reef-friendly sunscreen is the one you don't have to apply.
That doesn't mean skipping sun protection. Instead, try combining sunscreen with other ways to protect your skin, such as:
Wearing UPF-rated clothing or a rash guard
Using a wide-brim hat when you're out of the water
Seeking shade during the middle of the day
Limiting unnecessary sun exposure during peak UV hours
These strategies reduce the amount of sunscreen that washes into the ocean while also providing excellent protection from the sun.
Other ways to protect coral reefs while traveling
Choosing your sunscreen is a great start, but responsible ocean travel goes beyond what you wear.
When visiting coral reefs:
Never stand or walk on coral.
Avoid touching coral, even if it looks like rock.
Keep a respectful distance from marine life.
Don't feed wildlife.
Secure loose gear so it doesn't drag across the reef.
Leave shells, coral, and marine life where you found them.
Small actions like these can make a meaningful difference when thousands of travelers visit the same reef every year.
