ARTIC EXPEDITIONS
GREENLAND & BEYOND

Who is
The Great Expedition Company
The Great Expedition Company runs small-ship Arctic sailings for people looking for something real. These aren’t tours or cruises. They’re stripped-down, intentional voyages into the high north, built around curiosity, connection, and a sense of place.
Each trip takes just 12 guests. That’s on purpose. They believe small groups make for better conversations, more flexible travel, and a stronger shared experience. There’s no background noise. Everyone’s part of it.
They take inspiration from the early explorers...people like Ernest Shackleton, Robert Peary, and Fridtjof Nansen...not because they ’re trying to recreate their journeys, but because they understood something about scale, silence, and the value of going somewhere difficult. They documented what they saw. They listened to the landscape. They try to do the same.
The vessels are traditional wooden schooners. They move slower than modern ships, but that’s part of the experience. It gives the land room to speak. On board, the pace is relaxed. The days are shaped by weather, wildlife, and conversation. Some trips include workshops or personal projects. Some are quieter. All are designed to help people come back with something more than just photos.
This is travel for people who want to feel something. It’s not luxury. It’s not extreme. It’s something else.
How THey OPerate
-
12 guests. Always. Intimate by design — for real connection, not just access.
-
Application-based. No instant bookings.
People apply so we can shape the group intentionally. -
Guided by curiosity. Most trips are led by Joe, who mixes deep knowledge with a bit of theatre...poetry, philosophy, and a bottle of something good at the right moment.
-
Vessel-forward. We sail traditional wooden schooners. It’s slower, yes...and that’s the point.
-
Rooted in story. These aren’t itineraries so much as they’re chapters. People come to turn a page.

THE TRIP LEADER
JOE SHUTTER
British-Brazilian, Joe made Iceland his home a decade ago.
Since then, he’s spent countless summer seasons sailing the fjords of Eastern Greenland and crossing the rugged highlands of Iceland. In recent years, he’s deepened his relationship with the Arctic and Antarctic, exploring their wild frontiers with unwavering passion.
Joe’s love for the Polar Regions knows no bounds. With a photographer’s eye and an explorer’s spirit, he’s mastered the art of crafting intentional, transformative journeys, ones he takes great joy in sharing with fellow adventurers.
His leadership style? Exuberant, generous, and unforgettable. Joe believes in bringing a sense of joy and camaraderie to every voyage, creating a space where expedition teams feel both supported and inspired. Whether he’s navigating remote coasts or dancing under polar skies, he’s always present, ready for whatever nature has in store and always there for everyone onboard.
For Joe, guiding others into the wonders of the Arctic is a calling that never gets old. Uniting curious souls through shared awe and adventure is, and always will be, his greatest joy.
Why This Collaboration Makes Sense
Because this is the kind of travel that cuts through the noise and is raw, real, and rooted in connection.
The Great Expedition Company runs the kind of journeys we live for: small crew, big purpose, and a deep respect for the wild. Their Arctic voyages echo everything we value; intimacy, intention, and a pace that lets the land (and your soul) breathe.
It makes perfect sense to cross-promote their trips here, and we’re already working up a collaborative expedition for 2026. But honestly? Their 2025 trips are already an incredible offering and the chance to witness powerful marine life and dramatic, untouched landscapes in the high north. We couldn’t wait to share them with you.

LIFE ONBOARD S/V LINDEN
S/V Linden is undeniably a swoon-worthy vessel. This elegant 50 meter three-masted tall ship captures everyones attention as she glides on the polar seas. She is very strong, capable, and best suited scouring the ice in the Arctic. Built in 1993, as a modern take on the original Linden from 1923, she has been sailing for more than thirty years around the northerly seas, proving that she is trustworthy and made for arctic adventures.
Linden will host us in her bright and comfortable main saloon, where plenty of windows provide a panoramic view for you to watch the waves roll by. Accommodation is made up of 5 twin bunk-style cabins and 2 single cabins. Home-cooked meals by the on board chef will be enjoyed in her main saloon, amid a well stocked library of polar literature. Day to day life on board is exciting yet easy-going: we will discuss the upcoming route over a hearty breakfast, plan our days activities, share life experiences over warm tea, and keep our binoculars in hand whilst we look out for wildlife.
Having been built in Finland there is, of course, a well-sized sauna on board, which will be the perfect refuge after a polar-plunge!
